The Community Centred Research Award

At Community Trauma UK, we believe in the power of research to create meaningful change, especially when it centres the voices and experiences of communities. That’s why we’re proud to offer the Community Centred Research Award, recognising outstanding research that reflects our commitment to community-centred healing.

About the Award

The Community Centred Research Award recognises outstanding doctoral and PhD research focused on trauma and healing within Black communities. We welcome research that supports recovery and wellbeing through community-centred healing practices.  With many mainstream therapeutic models being rooted in Eurocentric frameworks that emphasise individualism, we recognise the vital importance of research that challenges these limitations.

Through this award, we celebrate and honour Black scholars in the UK who are advancing community-centred approaches to trauma and healing and contributing to a future where Black communities can heal, flourish, and thrive.

The award winner will:

  • Present their research at our Community Trauma Research Conference
  • Receive a £250.00 cash prize.

Who can apply?

We welcome applications from doctoral and PhD researchers who:

  • Identify as Black or Black Mixed Heritage
  • Are currently undertaking doctoral/PhD research in the UK or have completed their studies within the last two years.
  • Are conducting research that explores trauma and community-centred healing practices in Black communities in the UK, grounded in the principles of decolonisation, liberation and social justice.

Previous winner

We are excited to announce Dr Nicole Samuel as the inaugural winner of the 2024 award, delivered in partnership with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Nicole’s Award-Winning Research: ‘Disclosing Racial Trauma in Psychological Therapies: Exploring the Experiences of Racially Minoritised People in the UK’

Nicole is pictured here with our founder, Helen George, and Dr Clare Symons, Head of Research at BACP, receiving the £500 prize.

The impact

Based on the significant findings from Nicole’s research, our founder issued a clarion call to the counselling and psychotherapy profession to take action to prevent the harm being caused in the therapy room when clients disclose their experiences of racism.

Helen stated: “For too long now, racially minoritised therapists have been left to do all the work – and the significant findings of Nicole’s research tell us that there is still much more work to do.”
